Michael Mayo
Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, W1D 4HT , [Venue Details]Fresh off the release of Fly, his highly anticipated follow-up to the acclaimed Bones, Michael Mayo arrives with a sound that’s freer and more intuitive than ever.
The Los Angeles–born vocalist, composer, and arranger leans into instinct on this new project, channelling emotion through layers of harmonising, beatboxing, and fluid jazz phrasing. Recorded in just two days with an all-star band - pianist Shai Maestro, bassist Linda May Han Oh, and drummer Nate Smith - Fly blends adventurous originals with inventive takes on classics by Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, and more.
Shaped by a lifetime of music - his mother a sought-after vocalist for icons like Beyoncé and Whitney Houston, his father a saxophonist for Earth, Wind & Fire - Michael Mayo has emerged as one of the most versatile voices in contemporary jazz. After studies at the New England Conservatory and the Thelonious Monk Institute (now the Hancock Institute), he broke out with the single “No More” and his debut Bones, earning millions of streams, critical praise, and international touring opportunities, including performances with mentor Herbie Hancock.
On Fly, Mayo’s artistry soars - whether reimagining standards like “Just Friends”, crafting the breezy title track, or delivering a striking a cappella take on “I Didn’t Know What Time It Was”.
